I'm looking forward to reading...

Having just read - and really enjoyed - Neil Gaiman 's The Ocean at the End of the Lane , I was struck by the style, which reminded me of Alan Garner . Somehow, I'd missed the publication of Boneland in 2012, which completes the Weirdstone of Brisingamen cycle. In Boneland, I'm expecting a synthesis of the characters and storyline of Weirdstone, but with more of the feel of Red Shift . I've got really high hopes for this book ...

John Scalzi will be a new author for me, but I acknowledge that my SF reading is badly out of date, and I need to read a few authors who are still living, and have most of their own hair. I've read the sampler of this on my Kobo Touch, and like what I've seen. Echoes of Starship Troopers , perhaps?

The Iain (M) Banks "twins" - I've just completed 'The Hydrogen Sonata ' (as an audiobook) which is a very different experience. I really enjoy Peter Kenny's narration, and the care he gives to preparing beforehand shines through his reading. Anyway, that completed my reading of the mainstream of his Culture output, so catching 'The State of the Art ' (and - sometime - Inversions , which comes across as a Culture tangent) is for the sake of completeness. 'The Wasp Factory ' came as part of an Iain Banks set, from my favourite book bargains online store, and it's one of those 'you really must read' books, rather than one where the back cover blurb really captures my interest (which latter is definitely not the case). That said, I enjoyed Espedair Street , but TWF seems like a very different book.

Cory Doctorow - another relatively new author for me. I've read a couple of his YA books ('Little Brother ' and 'For the Win ') and enjoyed them. Reading a few more of his is part of my campaign to find modern SF authors with strong imaginations. (Jan 16th - brand new copy of Homeland arrived today.)
